Nina Hjelmgren is an experienced  lecturer.
She has given numerous lectures on
Afghanistan; politics, war, human rights, every-
day life. Nina has a unique experience being
one of the few journalists travelling in
Afghanistan long before it became front-page
news after 9/11. She stayed in Kabul when the
talibans captured the capitol. She has crossed
numerous front-lines and shared the anxiety of
war with people in different parts of
Afghanistan.
She has also produced photo-exhibitions.
Nina started CISCO VISION in 1998.
An Afghan general, a muslem guerilla soldier
who’s been at war for 20 years. And a journalist
from Sweden, a westernized woman who hates
violence. This book is about their improbable encounter.
When she realizes that he has been part of his country’s
bloody history all his adult life, she wants to know more.
He tells her his story.
Together they travel in the past of a man and his
country, but the reality of war hunts them. When she
returns to Afghanistan to continue interviewing him,
the talibans capture the capitol and forces the regime
to flight. He is the last of the government commanders
to leave Kabul. She stays.
Embedded by the warmth of the people she travels
through a landscape scarred by war. Join her! You don’t
have to be an expert on Afghanistan to be able to laugh
and cry when you read this book.
You only need to want to try to understand.
This is a story full of the drama of war. But also filled with
joy and tenderness. By coincidence I ended up in
Afghanistan during the spring of 1996. I met the schoolgirl
Zohra. The taxi driver Abbas. And commander Muslem.
A muslem guerilla soldier who spend all his adult life
liberating Afghanistan from the occupying Soviet power and
militant islamists. If I could tell his story, more people would
maybe understand more.
That is the way it is. I have during numerous trips met
people and followed events that have affected the whole
world.  In the summer of 1996 I wrote my first report on
Osama bin Laden´s camps in Afghanistan.
After the taliban take over of Kabul Muslem was no
longer at the front line. I was. We were just a handful
who followed what was happening. This book is about
the years prior to 9/11 2001. And the years after.
Come along on a personal and down-to-earth trip to
a country far away. You don’t need to be an expert.
Only somewhat curious.
